A weekend at Lake Perris

Twenty two miles from the yard, water and power at the site, and close enough that a first RV trip cannot really go wrong.

The closest trip we do

Lake Perris is 22 miles from the Hemet yard, about half an hour. It is the shortest run on our board and it is the one we recommend to anybody who has never done this before.

Short matters more than it sounds. If you forget something you can go home for it. If the awning baffles you, we can be there in thirty minutes. Nobody wants their first RV trip to be four hours from help.

Delivery is cheap at this distance

Our first fifteen miles are free, so a Lake Perris run only bills seven. That lands on our eighty five dollar minimum, which is the cheapest delivery we do.

For a first trip that is money well spent. We bring it out, level it, chock it, hook up water and power, drop the stabilizers and walk you through the whole unit before we leave. You turn up with food.

Hookups and what that means

The state recreation area has sites with water and power, plus a dump station on the way out. That is the useful middle. You can run the air conditioning, you can shower properly, and you are not carrying waste home.

Because there is power, you can rent anything on our board and it will work. On a dry site the choice matters. Here it does not.

When to go

April through September is the busy half and weekends book out. October through March is quiet, cheaper and still perfectly warm in the afternoon.

The wind gets up most afternoons off the water. Put the awning away before you go to the beach rather than after. An awning left out in a gust is the single most common damage claim we take.

Which unit to take

Because there is power at the site, anything on our board works here. That is not true everywhere, so it is worth saying.

If it is your first time, take something around twenty two to twenty five feet. It fits every loop, it is easy to walk around, and you are not learning to reverse a thirty footer in front of an audience. If there are six of you, the bunk models earn their keep.

What is actually there

A proper swim beach with sand, a marina, and the climb up Terri Peak if somebody wants a walk. Bernasconi Beach on the far side is quieter than the main one.

It is twenty minutes from a supermarket, which sounds dull and is genuinely the reason it works so well as a first trip.

What to bring that people forget

The site has water and power, so you need the bits that connect you to them. We send those out with every unit, but the rest is on you.

  • Shade. There is not much natural cover on the main loops
  • A mat for the door. The ground is dusty and it ends up inside
  • Firewood from a local seller, because moving wood any distance is restricted
  • A second set of keys, kept by somebody who is not you

Booking it

Campsites go through the California state park reservation system and they open six months ahead. Summer weekends move fast. Winter you can often get something inside a fortnight.

Book the site first. Then send us the site number and the dates and we will match a unit that fits it.

If it goes wrong

Something small usually does on a first trip. A slide that will not come in, a fridge that will not light, a tank sensor reading wrong.

Call the number on your agreement. At twenty two miles we can be there inside the hour, which is the real reason this is the trip we point first timers at.
